- Not connecting the symbol "3" to the idea of three things
Elementary school:
- Still using fingers to count long after classmates have moved on, because basic facts never become automatic
- Learning math facts one night and losing them by the weekend, over and over
- Trouble understanding that 5 + 3 and 3 + 5 are the same problem
- Difficulty with place value, like reading 41 as fourteen
- Word problems feel impossible even when the child reads them fluently
Middle school and beyond:
- Relying on a calculator or fingers for basic arithmetic
- Trouble making change, estimating costs, or handling money
- Difficulty telling time on an analog clock or judging how long tasks will take
- Trouble remembering number strings like phone numbers, locker combinations, or game scores
- Getting lost in multi-step problems, even with a formula sheet

Dyscalculia or Math Anxiety?
This is the question we hear most from parents, and it matters because the two look similar from the outside: avoidance, frustration, tears over homework.
The difference is the direction of the arrow. Math anxiety is an emotional response that blocks skills a child actually has; on a calm day, with no timer and no audience, the ability shows up. Dyscalculia is a skills gap that often creates anxiety, because the child is genuinely working twice as hard for half the result. 2. Talk to the teacher and rule out basics. Ask whether the same struggles show up in class and how your child compares to grade-level expectations.
